Canton Cabaret Staff Rose DarlingWhen the principal of Wells School called me into his office one day, I couldn't imagine what I'd done wrong to deserve that dreaded call! Gulp! He sat behind his mammoth desk, waved a stack of papers at me, smiled and said, " Now Rose Marie, how are we going to bring a horse on to the stage here at Wells School? Does it have to be a real horse?" He referred to my first play . . . title long forgotten . . . that I'd written in the third grade and presented to my teacher as a possible school play. And yes, it required a real, live horse. Alas, the play never made it to the stage because of that essential requirement, but his encouragement, and that of teachers, family and other important people during those young years, certainly helped my interest in theatre and writing grow. Some ** years later, that performance/writing bug still urges me into creative and artistic endeavors, and with my wonderful husband, Geoffrey, an actor/writer of the finest caliber from New Zealand, we are enjoying lots of creative endeavors since our return to Ohio to be closer to our family in June of 2006. Ours is a cyber-storybook romance and we love to tell it . . . just ask! While in New Zealand, I had the honor to be music director at St Mary's Provincial (Anglican) Cathedral with an historic central position in Taranaki and long tradition of fine music. The people there were so very gracious and it was a lovely time in our lives. Geoffrey and I had such fun presenting several concert programs of poetry/theatre and music, continuing in the path I had enjoyed since I was a young girl here in the Canton area. As a writer/performer, I've penned and directed in Canton and/or New Zealand, The Zip-Dee-Doo Revue; a Renaissance Faire; Cricket on the Hearth -the story-teller version; Poems and Songs I Learned as a Child and Grew to Love; Songs of the Sea; "The Elf Princess" (c) 2000 Creative Press (co-written by my sister Tori LaPorte/Victoria Brunk); Lessons in a Lunchbox (c)2002; MindMarvels (c) 1999 and other projects and plays. Currently I am working on Songs Sung Blues, which centers around several key female singers/entertainers of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920's-30's. These fascinating women dealt with many of the same issues of today - abuse, drugs, alcoholism, and poverty, and some overcame those challenges but others did not. This musical revue is lively, and filled with those early blues: a montage of music by these women: Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Ethel Waters, Josephine Baker, and Lena Horne, the gorgeous star who still lights up the musical skies. It's so exciting to be part of this team that will help bring wonderful musical productions to the Canton Cabaret! I believe that every human life is a magnificent spiritual journey with intelligence to its design, purpose to its challenges and arrival at its end.
